Greytown, 31st December, 1875.
SIR—I have the honor to forward the Annual Report for the Wairarapa and East Coast Districts for the year ending 31st December, 1875.
It will be seen that there are still nine flocks in the district that have not obtained clean certificates, although I believe several of them will prove clean when examined.
The scab is at present confined to the country in the neighborhood of Tu Puru Puru, and to Messrs. Sutherland’s and Cameron’s stations on the Pahau River.
There is nevertheless great danger of its spreading, notwithstanding the efforts being made to confine it within the boundaries mentioned.
The flock of native sheep at Mungahuia were shorn and dipped under my own superintendence, but, owing to some misunderstanding with the natives, I gave up charge of the flock. Although a month had elapsed between the first dip and the second, I was told that there were only two lambs out of nearly 3000 sheep that showed any signs of scab.
I have been enabled to induce the natives at Long Bush to accept the assistance of some of their European neighbors. The Mungahuia natives are also assisted by Europeans, so that the natives at both places have the assistance of Europeans, whose names are a positive guarantee that everything will be done that it is possible to do.
I have, &c.,
THOMAS TELFORD,
Inspector of Sheep, Wairarapa and East Coast.
Henry Bunny, Esq.,
Provincial Secretary, Wellington.
