SHEEP INSPECTOR'S REPORT—continued.

District Number of Sheep Assessment
Turakina 49,855 £ s. d.
103 17 3½
Rangitikei 71,310 148 11 3
Manawatu 37,692 78 10 6
Total 158,857 330 19 0½

It will be seen by the above Returns that there are at present five flocks under scabby report, three of which, in all probability, will be pronounced clean in a short time, the certificates only being withheld for reasons as shown in margin.

I find an increase upon last year’s Returns of 28,769, making a difference of £59 18s. 8½d. in the assessment in favour of the present year.

There has been an unusual heavy loss sustained throughout the District during the past season, which I believe to be chiefly due to the long drought experienced last autumn, causing great debility in the young sheep particularly; and which, after the first growth of young grass set in, was followed by diarrhoea of a very severe nature, causing a loss as high as fifteen per cent. in many instances.

I am of opinion that a greater variety of grasses should be sown, which would prove to be of great benefit in the event of having to encounter so unfavourable a season again as that experienced in the past.

The increase of lambs has not been equal to that of last year. This I consider is due to the cold and backward spring causing a great scarcity of milk, as well as a heavy loss in the lambs.

ROBERT K. SIMPSON,
Inspector of Sheep.
