Proclamation.
By His Honor William Fitzherbert, Esquire, C.M.G., Superintendent of the Province of Wellington, in the Colony of New Zealand.
WHEREAS by section 13, of “The Marine Act 1867,” it is enacted that no person shall be appointed or continue to be a Pilot at any port unless he shall have first passed such examination as the Governor shall have first prescribed in that behalf, and shall have received and continue to hold a certificate of competency or license. And whereas by the said Act the Governor may by order in Council from time to time delegate all or any of the powers vested in him by the said Act, to any person or persons as in section 6, of the said Act mentioned. And whereas the Governor in Council did, on the eighth day of January, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-eight, as evidenced by the New Zealand Gazette, of the twenty-third day of January, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-eight, delegate to His Honor the Superintendent of the Province of Wellington, the powers vested in him by sections 12, 13, 17 and 42, of the said Act.
Now, therefore I, William Fitzherbert, Superintendent of the Province of Wellington, do hereby proclaim and declare that by virtue of the powers so vested in me as aforesaid, that the rules particularly set forth in the schedule hereto, for the examination and appointment of Pilots for the various ports in the Province of Wellington, shall come into force on and after the first day of August, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-four.
Given under my hand, and issued under the Public Seal of the Province of Wellington, at Wellington, this 29th day of July, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-four.

SCHEDULE.
A Board for the examination of candidates for the appointment of Pilot, shall be composed of Nautical Officers, of not less than two in number, all of whom possessing a certificate of competency as master of a square rigged sailing vessel, except duly qualified officers of Her Majesty’s Navy; one member of the Board at least must have a thorough knowledge of the Harbor, River, or Roadstead, and their approaches, in respect of which the candidate is being examined.
The candidate for the appointment of Pilot must be a British subject and not less than twenty-five years of age, must produce certificates of good conduct and sobriety, also medical certificate that he is in good health and not afflicted with any bodily infirmity rendering him unfit for the duty of Pilot.
The candidate applying for the appointment of Pilot for the Port of Wellington, must have served at least one year, as master of a square rigged sailing vessel of not less than two hundred tons Register.
