COMPARATIVE RETURN of SHEEP in the WELLINGTON and WEST COAST

DISTRICT for the Years 1866 to 1872, inclusive.

Date Clean Scab Total Remarks
December, 1866 34,640 7,367 42,007
November, 1867 60,520 11,490 72,010 Including Kapiti, Mana, and
July, 1868, & Oct., 1869 70,933 5,749 76,682 Some Island flocks
October, 1870 70,849 5,079 75,928
October, 1871 69,337 ... 69,337
October, 1872 80,950 ... 80,950

Since the last yearly Return there has not been a single case of scab to report; in fact for the last two years all the flocks in the District have held clean.

The above Return shows an increase over last year of 11,613 sheep, which is accounted for in some measure by a number of small flocks added since 1871, caused by fresh enterprise consequent on the favorable prices realized for wool during the last two years.

Taking the flocks all through the District there is a decided improvement in them, and in many of the stations and farms the long and coarse-woolled sheep are replacing those of the fine Merino.

R. D. WALLACE,
Inspector of Sheep,
Wellington and West Coast District.

Sheep Inspector’s Office,
Wellington, 31st October, 1872.
