In my Report of last year the Oterai, Houtotara and Long Bush Flocks were in a very diseased state. The Oterai flock has since been cleaned, and continues to keep so. The Houtotara, Mr. Wilson’s, has been potted. The Maori flock at Long Bush is still in a very diseased state, and requires some severe pressure to make the owners clean it. Five flocks that were diseased last year, have been potted, viz.:—Brightwell’s, Barnett’s, R. Wilson’s, Wrattan’s, and Miss Jean’s. There has been no fresh spread of disease, except in that of Mr. Cameron’s, Pahau, and I believe it was detected in quick time and nipped in the bud, so that there is much less scab in the district than there has been for years.

The Hon. Mr. Waterhouse had great difficulties to contend with when he first purchased the Huangarua station, the flock being Scabby at the time, and most of the neighbours were in a similar state; I may safely say that Mr. Waterhouse has used his utmost exertions to eradicate the disease, having fenced the whole of his run with a wire boundary fence, and is about to subdivide it. An extensive boiling down pot has also been erected on the premises. Mr. Waterhouse has also done his utmost in rendering assistance to his neighbours. My only fear is that when this flock is clean, it may again become infected by the Maori flock at Long Bush, no exertion being made to clean this flock.

Mr. Sutherland, of Pahaua, neglected last year to supply sufficient material for dipping his flock, consequently did little to cure the disease. This year his efforts seem to be to a better purpose. The boiling down pot at Featherston has been a great boon to many of the flock owners, by ridding them of their surplus stock, that were unfit for the butcher and likely to engender disease.

I have the honor to be, Sir,

Your most obedient servant,

W. H. DONALD,
Inspector of Sheep, Wairarapa.

To A. Follett Halcombe, Esq.,
Provincial Secretary, Wellington.
