COMPARATIVE RETURN of SHEEP in the WELLINGTON DISTRICT for the Years 1866 and 1871, inclusive.

Date Clean Scab Total Remarks
December, 1866 34,640 7,367 42,007
November, 1867 60,520 11,490 72,010
July, 1868, and
October, 1869 70,933 5,749 76,682
October, 1870 70,849 5,079 75,928 Between October, 1870, and May, 1871,
October, 1871 69,337 ... 69,337 there has been about 2500 boiled down.

Total Returns for 1871, ending in May, 69,337; Assessment, £144 9s. 0½d.

The decrease in the number of sheep between the years 1867 and 1871, may be accounted for in a great measure by some of the flockowners stopping breeding in the flocks in order to facilitate their operations in cleaning rough runs of sheep infected with scab, added to which about 2500 have been boiled down during the present year.

The demand for lambs by butchers also tends to keep down the increase, and wethers in fair condition find a ready market.

In several instances, flocks formerly under scabby report have been cleaned by Hood’s and Cooper’s dipping composition, while others have been dressed with tobacco and sulphur with equal success. Great care in mustering, and continued attention, has had a great deal to do with achieving such results.

It will be seen from the foregoing returns that the condition of the flocks have greatly improved during the last four years; and it is also satisfactory to report that all flocks in the Wellington district, up to the present date, are clean.

P. D. WALLACE,
Inspector of Sheep,
Wellington and West Coast District.

Sheep Inspector’s Office,
Wellington, 3rd October, 1871.
