part of the North Island, opening up as it will valuable agricultural land, and so soon as it becomes connected with Wellington by rail, secure to the settler an outlet for stock, grain, &c.

Wellington Gaol,
2nd June, 1871.

Sir—I have the honor to report for your information, that the entire cost for the maintenance of this gaol during the year ending 31st December, 1871, amounted to the sum of £2,149 5s 2d.

Daily average number of prisoners, 63½.

Average annual cost of each prisoner ........ 40 3 6

Value of prisoner labor employed in the construction and repair of roads in the city ........ 1283 0 0

Exclusive of the above, a new dwelling house has been erected for the Warden by prison labor, a new fence put up, old fences repaired, and other work done about the gaol, the total value of the whole amounting to ... 232 0 0

Shoemaking and repairing for prisoners ... 25 0 0

Received for maintenance of debtors ... 12 12 0

Received for picking oakum ... 7 13 6

Due to the Provincial Government on the 31st March, 1870, from the Imperial and General Governments, Maintenance of military and naval prisoners ... 68 7 8
