SHEEP INSPECTOR’S REPORT—Continued.

I have very little hesitation in assuming that before many years pass we shall have a complicated set of diseases among our domestic animals, as in England, and for certain nothing in my mind will tend to hasten on these diseases quicker than poverty of food.

During the summer months “Periodic Ophthalmia” has attacked many of the hill flocks, more so in this than former years, gradually disappearing after a certain time without any artificial treatment being used.

It would appear to me to be an Animalcule, that wounds the eye for a certain time causing the dimness we observe, which after a stated period passes off leaving the eye in its natural state. I may be allowed here to state that there is no difficulty as regards animalcules getting into the eye, and even instances of their passing through the smallest capillaries, as well as being found in every tissue.

I offer no apology for making these remarks, as I hope they may prove useful.

I have the honor to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient servant,

W. H. DONALD,
Inspector of Sheep, Wairarapa and East Coast.

To A. Follett Halcombe, Esq.,
Provincial Secretary.
