Deserters from H.M. Forces.

Provincial Secretary’s Office,
Wellington, 31st January, 1863.

HIS HONOR THE SUPERINTENDENT directs the following despatch from the Colonial Secretary, having reference to deserters from H.M. Forces, to be published for general information.

J. WOODWARD,
Acting Provincial Secretary.

(Circular No. 4.)
Colonial Secretary’s Office,
Auckland, 21st January, 1863.

Sir,

I have the honor to enclose a copy of a Circular which has been addressed by my directions to Magistrates and other Officers containing descriptive Returns of Deserters from the Army and Navy, with a view to the capture of such Deserters; and I shall feel obliged if Your Honor will be good enough to give instructions in accordance therewith to the Police in the Province of Wellington, and cause the descriptive Returns (printed slips of which will be forwarded to your Honor’s office from time to time) to be posted at the several Police Stations, Ferries, and other Public Places.

I have the honor to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient servant,
ALFRED DOMETT,
His Honor
The Superintendent,
Wellington.

(Enclosure I.)
Colonial Secretary’s Office,
Auckland, 20th January, 1863.

Sir,

I am instructed by Mr. Domett to call your attention to the Returns inserted in the "New Zealand Gazette," describing the persons of Deserters from Her Majesty’s Army and Navy.

It is the earnest wish of the Government to check the practice of Desertion from the Imperial Forces: and hence a Reward of Five Pounds has been offered by the Colonial Government to the person capturing any such Deserters (in addition to the Reward of Two Pounds granted by the Imperial Government). And the publication of the Descriptive Returns above alluded to, will be from time to time continued.

The Government relies with confidence on your making use of every means in your power to carry out these efforts to check Desertion; and it is hoped that the means now provided for identifying the men will lead to the apprehension of all who are still at large.

I beg to enclose a copy of the Return last published.

I have the honor to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient servant,
(Signed) W. GISBORNE,
Under Secretary.
