NOTICE.

WHEREAS I have been credibly informed that large quantities of guns and gunpowder have of late been purchased by Aboriginal Natives of New Zealand, in Wellington and its vicinity, for the purposes of transmission to persons now in arms against Her Majesty: Now I hereby give notice to all persons in Wellington, licensed to sell gunpowder, shot fit for sporting purposes, and percussion caps, not to sell any of such articles to any person of the native race without special permission from me;

and that if any person so licensed shall, during the continuance of the present disturbances, sell any such articles to persons of the native race contrary to this notice, application will be made to His Excellency the Governor for the immediate revocation of his license.

HIS HONOR THE SUPERINTENDENT directs the publication of the following extract from the “Arms Importation Ordinance,” Sess. VI., No. 1, and also of the Proclamation of His Excellency the Governor relating thereto.

Extract from the “Arms Importation Ordinance,” Sess. VI., No. 1.

  1. “Every person who shall wilfully and knowingly, and contrary to the provisions of any such Proclamation as aforesaid, sell, or dispose of any arms, gunpowder, or other warlike stores, shall for every such offence forfeit and pay any sum not exceeding £500, to be recovered in a summary way; and all arms, gunpowder, and other warlike stores so unlawfully sold or disposed of, shall be forfeited to Her Majesty, and may be seized in manner hereinbefore provided.”

By His Excellency Colonel Thomas Gore Browne, Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, &c., &c., &c.,

WHEREAS by an Ordinance enacted by the Lieutenant-Governor of New Zealand, with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council thereof, Sess. VI., No. 1, intituled “An Ordinance to empower the Governor of New Zealand to regulate the Importation and Sale of Arms, Gunpowder and other Warlike Stores,” it is enacted that it shall be lawful for His Excellency the Governor from time to time, by proclamation, to prohibit, and also to make provision for regulating and restricting throughout the Colony of New Zealand the importation or sale, or both the importation and sale of arms, gunpowder, and other warlike stores: And whereas it is expedient that the several regulations now in force in different parts of the said Colony should be superseded, and other provisions substituted in lieu thereof: Now, therefore, I, the Governor, in exercise of the power vested in me in that behalf, do hereby prohibit throughout the said Colony the importation and sale of arms, gunpowder, and other warlike stores.
