NOTICE TO MARINERS.

SIGNAL STATION, WANGANUI.

A Flag-staff has been erected at the Bluff, on the north side of the entrance of the Wanganui River.

When a vessel appears in the offing, and the Bar is unfit to take, a White Flag will be hoisted at the mast-head of the Flag-staff. When the Bar is fit to take, a Red Flag will be substituted.

At half-flood, a Black Ball will be hoisted half-mast high, and the same Ball will be sent up to the mast-head one hour before high-water, and be hauled down altogether at half an hour’s ebb.

When a vessel is about to take the bar, a Black Ball will be hoisted under the yard, and will traverse from yard-arm to yard-arm, to direct the vessel through the channel.

Marryatt’s Code of Signals is kept at the Station, to communicate with vessels when required.

In moderate weather vessels can approach with safety to observe the signals.
