Provincial Secretary's Office,
Wellington, January 15, 1855.
HIS HONOR THE SUPERINTENDENT directs the publication of the following letter and accompanying statement for general information.
By His Honor's command,
WILLIAM FITZHERBERT,
Provincial Secretary.
Hutt, 17th December, 1855.
SIR,—I have the honor to enclose a statement shewing the lengths of Roads made in this Province, from the 1st October, 1853, to the 25th December, 1855.
I may remark, that the Earthquake which occurred in January last caused a very serious loss to this year's work, as I was obliged to suspend the making of new roads for several months, and that at the most favorable season for road making, in consequence of having to employ all the men in repairing damages, thereby breaking up the party, which I have not even been able to collect again.
The total sum expended in repairing the damages caused by Earthquake amounts to £1150.
I have great pleasure in informing your Honor that last week I contracted with Mr. H. Udy for the opening of 50 chains of the Rimutaka road, and also with Mr. Nicholson for completing the remaining unfinished portion of the Upper Hutt road, a distance of 41 chains. In consequence of which, I have been able to remove the whole of the Government road party to the Rimutaka.
I may also mention that £200 has been expended on a road through Greytown; but the work being so imperfectly done, I have not included it in my return.
The following local lines are contracted for, and in progress :—
| Chains. | £ | |
|---|---|---|
| Completing the Wainui-o-mata extension | 50 | 150 |
| Weston Pack and Russell to join White's Line, Waiwetu | 34 | 149 |
| Morrison's Bush | 68 | 68 |
| Ngahauranga Bush | 170 | 70 |
| 322 | 437 |
Upwards of 4 Miles.
I have, &c.,
JOHN ROY,
