REPORT OF THE NEW PLYMOUTH EDUCATION BOARD.

New Plymouth,
December 22, 1874.

To the New Plymouth Education Board,—

GENTLEMEN, — In obedience to a resolution of your Board, passed on the 2nd day of November last, directing me to visit the schools under your control and to report on their present condition, I have the honor to state that I have fulfilled your instructions so far as practicable, and now beg to present my Report together with certain recommendations for the promotion of education in the district, which I trust will be found worthy of your attention.

I have the honor to be,
Gentlemen,
Your obedient servant,
BENJAMIN WELLS,
Honorary Inspector of Schools,
pro. tem.

Report as to the Condition of the Schools under the Control of the New Plymouth Education Board.

Sub-district No. 1.—The Okato School

Conducted by Mrs. Hogarth.—I found this school assembled in a small room of the Okato blockhouse. The teacher complained of having suffered much during the winter from the rain driving into the room in consequence of the dilapidation of the building. Five children only were present; the average attendance is eight. The eldest child was thirteen years of age, and the youngest five. The children write in copy books; their writing I found to be commendable, and, in one instance, decidedly good. All the children read tolerably well. Writing from dictation was fairly performed. The spelling was rather below what could be desired. The arithmetic tables had been fairly learned, and the elder children were conversant with the compound rules of arithmetic. I obtained a few answers to questions on British History, and on the elementary rules of grammar: but none on geography. The school has no maps, no black-board, and no reading books; but one copy of a child’s History of England, and one of a miscellaneous reading book. The hours of this school are from 10 to 12 and from 1 to 3.
