PROVINCIAL SURVEYOR’S REPORT.

Survey Office,
New Plymouth, May 2, 1872.

SIR,—I have the honor to forward the subjoined Report on the condition of the department under my charge.

The work performed has been of a very general nature, principally the setting out of lines of road, surveying alterations, endeavoring to correct the old surveys, and supervision of contracts.

Unfortunately, for want of extra assistance, the adjustment of surveys of this Province by triangulation, and a proper theodolite survey of the country, which was commenced two years ago, has not been continued, so that the difficulties experienced, both by this department and the public through numberless inaccuracies consequent upon a magnetic survey of such an extent, still exist, and are increasing both in number and magnitude. I, therefore, trust that the Government will consider this matter, and provide this department with the necessary assistance for the fully carrying out of this important work. For further information on this subject, I beg to refer your Honor to my report to you on the 3rd February, 1871, and letter dated 5th October of the same year, in both of which I have entered into the matter more fully, and suggested a course which, if adopted, will not only have the effect of correcting the old work, but would form a basis for the correct survey of lands acquired by the Government in the future.

The work in the office is greatly in arrear, and is becoming daily more so, as it is impossible to execute the many demands upon it without assistance—I have, &c.

Thomas Humphries,
Chief Provincial Surveyor.

His Honor the Superintendent,
Taranaki.
