THE following Provincial Hospital Regulations are published for general information:-

Regulations for the Provincial Hospital, New Plymouth.

  1. Persons desiring to obtain admission into the Provincial Hospital must, if possible, apply personally to the Superintendent or Provincial Secretary, or in the case of persons of the native race and half-castes to the Civil Commissioner or his representative, for an order. If the person requiring treatment is too ill to apply personally, the order may be applied for by any other person on his behalf.

  2. Persons who have obtained an order as above must present the same to the Colonial Surgeon at the Provincial Hospital at 10½ a.m., who, after having enquired into the case, shall countersign such order if he considers that Hospital treatment is required.

  3. In cases of severe accident or sudden illness the Hospital Steward may admit patients in the Hospital provisionally without an order, but in other cases no applicant shall be admitted except upon production of an order countersigned by the Provincial Surgeon.

  4. The patients to be in future admitted free will be only such as are destitute, and cannot obtain relief from their friends. Those who can afford to pay will be charged at the rate of 2s. per diem, and on applying for an order of admission will be required to sign a memorandum that they are willing to pay at that rate.

  5. Patients will not be permitted to remain in the Hospital after the Provincial Surgeon certifies that they are sufficiently recovered to attend to their usual trade or calling.

  6. Patients in the hospital are to obey all directions given by the steward with a view to the preservation of order and quietness, and are to refrain altogether from talking or making any unnecessary noise when requested to do so.

  7. Convalescent patients may be required to assist in the care of their fellow patients, or to do such light work in or about the
