NOTICE.

Superintendent’s Office,
New Plymouth, December 6, 1864.

The following communication from Col. Warre has been received at the Superintendent’s Office, and is published for general information.

W. M. CROMPTON,
Deputy Superintendent.

GARRISON OFFICE,
New Plymouth, Dec. 5, 1864.

Sir,—As I consider that the false reports circulated yesterday, and on other occasions, produce very unnecessary excitement and alarm unwarranted by the comparatively quiet state of the settlement, I do myself the honor to enclose for your information copy of a Garrison Order—forbidding, as far as is in my power, the discharge of fire-arms, except in self-defence; so that in the event of firing being heard in the bush, or in unfrequented parts of the settlement, instant steps may be taken to ascertain the cause, and to avert the threatened danger.

I shall forward a copy of this Order to all the Outposts; and I feel sure that you will render me every assistance to circulate it amongst the civilians in Town, in order to enforce precautions I deem it my duty to take for public safety.

I have, &c.,
H. J. WARRE, Col.,
Commanding Troops Taranaki.

His Honor
The Superintendent,
Taranaki.

EXTRACT.

Garrison Orders.
New Plymouth, 5th Dec., 1864.

To prevent as far as possible the circulation of false and alarming reports—such as were propagated yesterday, Col. Warre, Commanding Troops in Taranaki, feels it necessary to prohibit persons from shooting or discharging fire-arms on any pretence, except in their own defence, or when necessary on the beach, on application being made to the proper authorities.

  1. All persons hearing the report of firearms, or becoming in any way acquainted with the movements of rebel natives, are required without delay to make known the circumstances to the nearest military post, or to report the same to the Garrison Adjutant, for the information of the Colonel Commanding, who will then take steps to provide against the threatened danger.

  2. All friendly natives in search of cattle or otherwise employed in the bush, are provided with a pass from the Native Office.

By Order,
(Signed) E. BUXTON, Lieut.
Garrison Adjt.
