Superintendent’s Office,

New Plymouth, 18th July, 1863.

THE attention of the public is urgently requested to the following letter and its enclosures which are published for general information. The Superintendent hopes that Dr. Mackinnon will receive from the inhabitants every possible facility in the performance of the onerous duty devolved upon him, and upon which will in a great measure depend the health of the town and the safety of families.

Charles Brown,
Superintendent.

Garrison Office,

New Plymouth, 15th July, 1863.

Sir,—In compliance with instructions received from the Lieut.-General Commanding, I have the honor to request the attention of your Honor and of the Provincial Government to the enclosed letter from the Principal Medical Officer in New Zealand, addressed to Surgeon Mackinnon, 57th Regiment, and I am to suggest with a view to the preservation of the health of the population of this Town—at present unfortunately crowded into far too little space, and into houses far too few for the numbers of its inhabitants—that your Honor will cause such steps to be taken as will enable Surgeon W. I have, &c.,
H. J. Warre, Colonel,
Commanding Troops in Taranaki.

His Honor the Superintendent,
Taranaki.

P. Medical Officer’s Office,

Auckland, 6th July, 1863.

Sir,—In consequence of the recent appearance of Typhus fever, amongst the militia and civil population, I have the honor to inform you that the Lieut.-General has approved of your being appointed Sanitary Officer at Taranaki (vide extract General Orders attached).

With reference to the enclosed copy of a letter to his Honor the Superintendent, I have the honor to request you will be so good as to place yourself in communication with the Civil authorities through the Officer commanding the troops, with a view to suggest the adoption of such sanitary measures as may be deemed advisable under existing circumstances.

The various matters alluded to in my letter, such as the scavenging of the town, the emptying
