Extract from Regimental Orders.

New Plymouth, 24th May, 1861.

The Lieut.-General Commanding in New Zealand has sanctioned the employment of Soldiers under certain restrictions for the benefit of the inhabitants of this Province whose property has been destroyed during the recent disturbances, and for the advantage of the industrious and well-conducted Soldier.

  1. Men who are in possession of one or more good conduct badges are alone eligible for such employment.

  2. Every man must attend parade when ordered and take his guards, be present at tattoo and sleep in quarters.

  3. Every man must attend all parades and roll calls on Fridays and Sundays, and on every day be present at dinner roll call unless specially exempted.

  4. Civilians desirous of employing Soldiers will forward their application according to the following form, viz. :—

Application for a Soldier to be employed by ——— (name) ——— (profession)

No. Name. Service. Years. Service. Months. Character. Signature and recommendation by Officer Commanding Company.
Recommended he is in possession of ... G.C. badges.

Colonel Warre desires it may be understood that Soldiers are permitted to be thus employed as an indulgence, the abuse of which will lead to its withdrawal.
