Provincial Council Resolutions and Relief Funds

16

Provincial Council Chamber,
Napier, Tuesday, March 20, 1860.

That the Provincial Council of Hawke’s
Bay, ere it terminates its second session, is
desirous of placing on record its full and
entire sympathy with the Province of Ta-
ranaki, at present under Martial law owing
to the meddling of disaffected aborigines.
That this Council also congratulates the
Province of Taranaki on the manly and
self-relying spirit which evidently appears
to animate the bosoms of its settlers; and
on the very efficient aid so promptly ren-
dered it by the Governor of this Colony.
And while heartily and unanimously thank-
ing His Excellency for the same, and for
his equitable and open declaration of policy
—which this Council also sincerely believes
to be both suited to and beneficial for the
entire interests of the Province of Hawke’s
Bay—it further begs to be allowed to ex-
press the hope, that such policy will be for
the future everywhere alike steadily and
zealously adhered to.

And that a copy of this Resolution be
early forwarded by the Speaker of this
Council to His Excellency the Governor,
and to the Superintendent of the Province
of Taranaki.

Joseph Rhodes,
Speaker.

for the Committee of the “Auckland Ta-
ranaki Relief Fund” to transmit a second
copy.

The pleasing duty however devolves on
the Committee, to place at your disposal a
first instalment of the Subscriptions col-
lected.

The Committee are well aware of the
delicacy of the duty which they request you
to undertake, in dispensing aid, which has
the appearance of a charity, to those who
must feel that but for the fearful calamity
which has fallen upon them they would
have been far beyond the necessity of ac-
cepting such relief. The Committee trust,
however, that you may be able to make use
of the means now transmitted in some way
which may be acceptable to the recipients.

The Committee having received the full-
est discretionary power consider they can-
not better serve the wishes and feelings of
the subscribers to the fund than by dele-
gating the same discretionary power to
your Honor, being convinced your position
will better enable you than any other per-
son to attain the desired object of suec-
ouring the homeless settlers now at Taranaki
or who may have sought refuge at Nelson.

I have, &c.,

J. Logan Campbell,
Chairman to the Auckland “Taranaki
Relief Fund.”

Auckland, 7th April, 1860.

Sir,—The formal proceedings of the
Public Meeting held here to sympathise
with, and afford aid to, our suffering fellow
colonists in your Province, having been
forwarded to you through the Superintendent
of Auckland, it becomes unnecessary
to repeat them; but, in accordance with the
request therein contained, I enclose you

ENCLOSURE.

Alex. Kennedy’s letter of credit, dated
7th April 1860, authorising you to draw on
the Union Bank, Auckland, at sight in such
drafts as may be convenient to the extent of
five hundred pounds (£500).
