REPORT OF THE CHIEF SURVEYOR.
Survey Office, Invercargill,
July 19, 1864.
Sir,—With a view to my early departure from the Province, I have the honour to submit a report on the present condition and occupations of the Survey Department.
No returns of work done, cost, &c., have been prepared, since it is in every respect better that these should be made up annually, to a certain date. If desired, however, the amount of work performed by any particular surveyor, with the cost, or that of any particular block can be immediately ascertained from the books of the department, which, under the care of Mr. Wright, are in a condition to afford every required information at sight.
The largest and most important work on hand is the “Triangulation,” which, as stated in former reports, has been carried across from the western side of the Province, to the north of all the previously surveyed lands, to meet and close with the “Triangulation” from the eastern frontier, executed last year by Mr. Mueller.
Mr. Baker has been engaged in this, and it is now finished, except a more complete closure which it is desirable to make at Woody Knoll, and which involves a good deal of forest clearing.
Those two Triangulations, which together make a complete zone across the Province, have both, but especially the last, been conducted with extreme care, with the object of closing with the various and detached Triangulations formerly executed, and of clearing up and eradicating some errors which had crept into them; these have all proved to be so small, as not to lead to any sensible inaccuracy within the limits to which they have been confined, but had Triangulations been continued on from these, instead of starting from independent bases and observations, the divergences would have inevitably increased.
