STATISTICS OF SOUTHLAND, 1863.
PREPARATORY REMARKS.
At the close of the year 1863, it was apparent that the population of the Province of Southland had again increased in a ratio exceeding that of the former year; it therefore became necessary, in order that Southland might take her proper place amongst the provinces of New Zealand, to again take a Census of the Population.
The following Tables contain the Results of the Census, the Revenue, Imports, Exports, &c., with the actual and Censimal increase and decrease in each case.
During the last Session of the Provincial Council a measure was in contemplation for altering the Electoral Districts and increasing the number of Representatives; and the districts into which the Province has for the purpose of taking the Census been divided, are those calculated to afford the best basis on which to apportion the Representation.
But for this object it is evident that the Census Districts should have been the same as the Electoral Districts of the Province.
TABLE 1.—Population.
The increase of the population during the year 1862 was 1635, or 90 per cent., the increase during the year 1863 was 6090 souls or 176 per cent. In 1862 there were 2187 males and 1268 females, being 100 males to 58 females. In 1863 the males were 6543 and the females 3002 being 100 males to 46 females, the increased disproportion between the males and females being probably caused by the immigration of the large number of labourers now employed on the public
