IT is hereby notified that Mr William Hatley, Inspector of Sheep, Bluff district, is appointed under the provision of "the Diseased Cattle Act, 1863," to be an Inspector of Cattle at the Port of Bluff Harbour.

to be Pilot at Riverton; this appointment to date from the 22nd ultimo.

IT is hereby notified, that the undermentioned members of the Southland Police Force, have been appointed to act as Inspectors of Slaughter Houses, under the provisions of the 'Slaughter House Ordinance, 1847'; for the districts undernamed respectively:-

Sergeant Robert Forster,
Riverton district.

THE following instances of meritorious conduct, on the part of the undermentioned members of the Police Force, are published for general information.

GRATUITIES.

  1. To James Tuory, Foot Constable,
    a sum of £5 is awarded for tact and energy displayed on the 10th April, 1863, in arresting Harry Marino for stealing £90 from a dwelling, and recovering £68 7s 6d of the stolen property.

  2. To Foot Constable William Edward Sivry,
    a sum of £5 is awarded for shrewdness and ability in tracing out the perpetrator of a robbery at West's Hotel, on the Bluff Road, and on the 16th April, 1863, arresting the offender (James Russell) and recovering five ozs, eighteen dwts. and twelve grs. of gold, out of six ounces 12 dwts. which was stolen.

  3. To Sergeant Forster,
    and Foot Constable Creighton,
    a sum of £5 is awarded for zeal and activity in pursuing and capturing John Rourke who, on the 10th April, 1863, escaped from the Invercargill gaol.


I, ROBERT MITCHELL, Returning Officer, appointed by His Honor the Superintendent of the Province of Southland, to preside at a meeting of the Electors entitled to vote for members for the Town of Invercargill in the Provincial Council of Southland, assembled on Saturday the 2nd day of May at Twelve o'clock, noon, at the School-house, Invercargill, for the purpose of electing four persons to be Members of the Town Board of Invercargill, hereby certify that the following persons were duly elected by a majority of votes:-

Mr. John Hare appointed Registration and Returning Officer for the District of Wallace.

HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to appoint

Mr John Hare
to be Registration and Returning Officer for the election of Members of the House of Representatives for the Electoral District of Wallace. This appointment to take effect from the 14th proximo.
