✨ Sheep Inspector's Report and Sheep Returns
SHEEP INSPECTOR’S REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDING 30TH SEPTEMBER, 1875.
Sheep Inspector’s Department,
Dunedin, December 23rd, 1875.
SIR,—
I have the honor to forward, for the information of the Government, Annual Return of Sheep for the Province of Otago for year ending September 30th, 1875. Owing to the absence of the late Chief Inspector last year, no returns were compiled. I am, therefore, compelled to revert to the returns of 1873 to shew increase or decrease as compared with present return.
Returns for this year shew a total of three million eight hundred and fifty-two thousand three hundred and ninety-five (3,852,395), being an increase of four hundred and seventy-seven thousand nine hundred and sixty-three (477,963) since September, 1873.
Two millions three hundred and sixty thousand eight hundred and ten (2,360,810) are depastured on Runs; one million three hundred and fifty thousand six hundred and twenty-eight (1,350,628) on Freehold; twenty-three thousand nine hundred on Hundreds; one hundred and seventeen thousand and fifty (117,050) on Gold-field Runs.
Since annual return of 1873 a decrease of one hundred and seventy-one thousand nine hundred and forty (171,940) has taken place on Runs, while Freehold for same period shew an increase of five hundred and eighty thousand six hundred and seventy (580,670). Gold Field Runs for some time show an increase of seventy-two thousand five hundred and sixty-seven (72,567). Hundreds a decrease of three thousand three hundred and eighty-eight.
The decrease on Runs can be accounted for from the fact that a quantity of country then included in Runs has since become Freehold. That for the last two years all unimproved lands have been stocked up to their full carrying capacity (in some cases overstocked), and that the quantity of land laid down under grass is annually increasing.
To cultivation and artificial feeding we must look for our future increase in numbers as well as the greater portion of our fat stock.
The number of Sheep introduced into the Province by sea, since September 1874, has amounted to about eight hundred (800). All Stud Sheep.
By land from Canterbury Province, forty-six thousand five hundred and sixty-seven (46,567) have been introduced during same period. With exception of a small number to Canterbury and other Provinces our exports have been nil.
I am happy to be in a position to report all Sheep in the Province free from disease, nothing of the kind having existed for more than two years, and that an average return of Lambs, together with fair clip, are anticipated for this season.
I beg to attach Annual Reports from the different District Inspectors, shewing state and condition of stock within their respective Districts.
I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your most Obedient Servant,
BENJAMIN P. BAYLY,
Chief Inspector.
The Provincial Secretary, Dunedin.
