VII. A short Essay on some familiar subject to be named by the Examiners.

VIII. Penmanship, as shown by the Competitors’ papers under subjects VI., and VII. Preference will be given to a plain round hand.

IX. Latin.—(High and Grammar School Boys.) Grammar and Accidence; translation into English of a passage in Latin.

X. French.—(High and Grammar School Girls.) Grammar; translation into English of a passage from a French author.

XI. Marks will be given for the reading of Prose and Poetry, and for Recitation from memory. Competitors will be expected to read and recite before the local Examiners, but those who stand very high in other subjects may be required to attend afterwards at Dunedin for Reading and Recitation.

  1. A Scholarship will not be awarded to the best, or any other candidate, unless he or she shall have gained, in the aggregate, at least 70 per cent. of the number of marks attainable: and the Board shall be at liberty to suspend or terminate any scholarship on account of wilful misconduct or neglect of studies on the part of the holder.

  2. Each holder of a Provincial Scholarship shall receive free education at the High School and a payment of £30 per annum.

  3. Free education for terms of not less than two years nor more than four years, may, at the discretion of the Board, be granted to the unsuccessful competitors for Scholarships, who shall have gained a satisfactory percentage of the whole number of marks attainable; such Free Scholars may attend the High School, a Grammar School, or an approved Main District School, at their option.

  4. Certificates of Merit will be granted to those competitors who, though failing to gain Scholarships, distinguish themselves greatly.

  5. Arrangements will be made for holding the Examinations simultaneously at the several Schools of which intending candidates are pupils, and in order that sufficient time may be given for making the necessary preparations, teachers must forward to the Secretary of the Education Board, before the 15th November, 1874, the names of intending competitors belonging to their respective schools, together with a certificate of the age of every such scholar.


TEACHER WANTED for Kaitangata School. Salary, Government allowance, £75 per annum and School Fees, with a good house detached from school, and 1½ acre of ground. There are 50 pupils at present on the roll. Applications with testimonials, to be lodged with the undersigned on or before the 10th November, 1874.

WANTED, for the Boys’ High School, Dunedin, a thoroughly Competent English Master. The salary will consist of £300 per annum, and one-twelfth of the School fees. TENDERS Wanted for quarrying, breaking, and spreading 100 yards of 2½-inch Metal on Road at Goat Hill, Anderson’s Bay. Tenders to be sent to office of Mr. W. Hooper, Commission Agent, corner of High street and Princes street, Dunedin, before Friday, 16th instant.

NOTICE is hereby Given to the Ratepayers in the Portobello Road District, that the Road Board have resolved to levy a General Rate of twelve pence in the £ on all rateable property within the district, on the first of October, 1874, for the year ending June, 1875. The Rate-roll lies for inspection at the house of the undersigned.

Deborah Bay Subdivision of the Blueskin Road District.

The owners or occupiers of property in the above subdivision are hereby requested to remove all fences, buildings, or other obstructions they may have erected, or have in use, on or across any district road adjoining their properties, within three months from date of publication of this notice, otherwise legal proceedings will be taken against them for obstructing such district roads.
