NOTICE.—The North-East Valley Road Board intend on Saturday, the 6th September, to make a General Rate of one shilling (1s.) in the £ over the whole district, for the year ending June, 1874. The Rate Book can be seen at the hotel of Mr. Thomas Brown, North-East Valley, on and after Monday, the 25th August, 1873, for ten days.

NOTICE is hereby given that a Sitting at the Supreme Court for the despatch of Criminal and Civil business, will be helden at the Supreme Court House at Dunedin, on Monday the sixth day of October next, at the hour of ten o’clock in the forenoon, at which time and place all persons bound by recognizances to appear as prosecutors, plaintiffs, defendants, or witnesses, are required to give their attendance.

MALICIOUSLY SETTING FIRE TO AN UNOCCUPIED HOUSE.
£50 REWARD
And a Free Pardon to an Accomplice.
WHEREAS, on the night of the 8th instant, an unoccupied house, built of wood and iron, and recently used as an hotel, situate at Carrickton, Cromwell district, the property of Charles Colclough, valued at £150, was destroyed by fire: And whereas at an inquest held on the 12th instant, at the Star of the West Hotel, Carrickton, to enquire as to the origin of the said fire, the Jury returned the following verdict: "That the said house was wilfully, maliciously, and feloniously destroyed by fire, by some person or persons at present unknown to the jurors." Notice is hereby given that a reward of £50 will be paid by the Provincial Government of Otago, to any person who will give such information as will lead to the conviction of the person or persons by whom the said fire was caused, and His Excellency the Governor will be advised to grant a free pardon to an accomplice, not being the person who actually caused the fire, as will give such information as will lead to a like result.

The Forest Trees Planting Acts to be in operation in the Province of Otago.

A PROCLAMATION.
WHEREAS by “The Forest Trees Planting Encouragement Act 1871,” it is enacted that the Governor may from time to time, upon the application of the Superintendent and Provincial Council of any Province, by Proclamation in the New Zealand Gazette, declare the said Act to be in operation in any Province, or in any District being part of a Province, to be defined in such Proclamation, and on a day to be fixed in such Proclamation the said Act shall come into operation in such Province or District: And whereas on the sixteenth day of July, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-three, the Provincial Council of the Province of Otago passed a Resolution requesting His Honor the Superintendent to make application, on behalf of the Provincial Council, to the General Government to declare “The Forest Trees Planting Encouragement Act 1871” to be in operation in that Province: And whereas the Superintendent of the said Province hath transmitted to me a copy of the said Resolution, and hath requested me to cause the said Act to be proclaimed in the Province aforesaid:
Now therefore I, Sir James Fergusson, Baronet, the Governor of the said Colony, in pursuance and exercise of the authority vested in me by the said Act, and in accordance with the application of the said Superintendent and said Provincial Council as aforesaid, do hereby proclaim and declare that “The Forest Trees Planting Encouragement Act 1871,” as amended by “The Forest Trees Planting Encouragement Act Amendment Act 1872,” shall, on the twenty-third day of September next, be in operation in and throughout the Province of Otago aforesaid.
Given under the hand of his Excellency the Right Honorable Sir James Fergusson, Baronet, a Member of Her Majesty’s Most Honorable Privy Council, Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over Her Majesty’s Colony of New Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral of the same; and issued under the Seal of the said Colony, at Wellington, this third day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy-three.

WHEREAS by the fourth section of “The Forest Trees Planting Encouragement Act 1871,” it is among other things enacted that the Governor in Council may from time to time make Regulations for defining the number and description of trees to be planted on each acre, and the other terms and conditions to be fulfilled by persons claiming a free grant of land under the provisions of the said Act: And whereas by a Proclamation made by the Governor under the provisions of the said Act, of even date herewith, the said Act was proclaimed and declared to be in operation in the Province of Otago as and from the twenty-third day of September, one thousand eight hundred and seventy-three, as therein par-
