Mental and Moral Science
- Logic—deductive and inductive; books recommended—Bain’s logic and Jevons’ logic.
- Psychology.—Lectures on nervous system; books recommended—Carpenter’s physiology; lectures on the special senses and the intellect, including the historical evolution of modern doctrines.
- Ethics—class lectures and the study of ancient and modern ethical theories; books recommended—Stewart’s outlines and Bain’s mental and moral science.
- Political Economy; books recommended—Mill’s political economy.
Mathematics
- Plane geometry; 2. Algebra; 3. Plane trigonometry; 4. Plane co-ordinate geometry and conic sections.
Natural Philosophy
- The elements of statics, dynamics, hydrostatics, and pneumatics, with the solution of problems not requiring the differential or integral calculus.
- Heat and light as far as explained in the class.
Chemistry and Mineralogy
- Chemistry.—The principles of chemical combination and action; the chemistry of the non-metallic elements, of the metals, and of organic compounds; complex qualitative analysis; quantitative analysis of simple salts, and of limestones, silicates, soil, water, coal.
- Geology and mineralogy.—Physical geography; dynamical geology: the nature and operations of geological agents; structural geology: rock-masses, their structure and relations, joints, cleavage, metamorphism, faults, unconformability; stratigraphical geology: the structural characters of successive geological periods. Palaeontological geology: characters and distribution of the more important organic remains. Mineralogy: physical and chemical characters and composition of minerals.
Subjects of Examination for the M.A. Degree
Attendance on two additional classes—both literary or both scientific. Additional subjects in Latin and Greek: portions from authors not included in the examination for the B.A. degree. Additional subjects in mathematics: elements of differential and integral calculus. Natural philosophy: electricity and magnetism, as far as explained in the class. Astronomy as in Herschel’s Outlines.
Mental and moral science and natural science; the examination more extended than for the B.A. degree.

TO ROAD BOARDS AND OTHERS
NOTICE. — Several parties having this week forwarded Advertisements and failed to comply with the rule requiring prepayment, Advertisers in the Gazette are now informed that in all cases the money must be sent, or their Advertisements cannot be inserted. Those now on hand are held over until receipt of payment.
HAMPDEN Road District
NOTICE. — Ratepayers within the respective Subdivisions of the above district are requested to pay the amount of their respective rates for the current year to me, on or before Monday the 24th February, 1873, or legal proceedings will be taken to recover the same. BLUESKIN Road District
A general highway rate of One Shilling in the Pound having been made throughout this road district on the 28th day of January last, ratepayers having any objections to the amount of their assessments must state the grounds of their objections in writing, and deliver them to the undersigned, who will be in attendance for the purpose of receiving such objections from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the 27th and 28th instant, at the house of Mr. James Baird—the present office of the Board, and situate near the Port Chalmers and Blueskin road; or they can be addressed to the undersigned, and delivered per post, either at Port Chalmers Post-office, up till the 28th inst.
And notice is hereby given, that a special meeting of the Board will be held at twelve o’clock noon on Saturday, March 1, at the house of Mr. Baird, situate as above, for the purpose of hearing such objections. JOSEPH MAWSON, Clerk, Blueskin Road Board. Dated February 17, 1873.
PORTOBELLO Road District
NOTICE. — The Portobello Road Board having abandoned the rate levied on the 29th of October, 1872, hereby give notice that on the 28th instant a general rate of One Shilling in the Pound will be levied for the year ending June the 30th, 1873. Estimates and rate-roll lie for inspection at my house. Objections, if any, stated in writing and lodged with the clerk, will be heard at a special meeting of the Board, to be held on Saturday, the 5th of April, 1873, at Mr. Allen’s, Portobello Road, at 12 o’clock. NORTH TAIERI Road Board
NOTICE. — The North Taieri Road Board have decided to levy a general rate of One Shilling in the Pound on all rateable property within the district for the year 1872-73. The rate-roll of the North Taieri Subdivision now lies for inspection at the house of Mr. Chas. Waters, North Taieri; and the rate-roll of the Wingatui Subdivision lies at Mr. Wm. Couper’s, Mosgiel, from this date until the 1st day of March next. Objections, if any, must be lodged with the clerk, in writing, not later than the 1st day of March next. A special meeting of the Board will be held at Mosgiel on the 3rd day of March next, at 6 p.m., to hear objections, if any. W. McLEOD, Clerk to the Board. February 14, 1873.
KAIKORAI Bush Road Board
NOTICE is hereby given that it is proposed to levy a special rate of 9d. in the £ for the year ending June, 1873. The rate-roll lies for inspection at the Schoolhouse, Kaikorai, and objections to the rate, if any, will be heard and decided on at a meeting to be held for that purpose on Wednesday, the 5th March, 1873.
