Queenstown Cemetery Report

Messrs. Powell, Matheson, Hallenstein, Robertson, and Manders.

  1. They represent all creeds of religion settled in the Wakatip District.

  2. The ground for the cemetery is about ten acres. The amount fenced in is four acres or thereabouts.

  3. The side fronting Queenstown is planted with blue-gum trees.

  4. The whole of these four acres are fenced in with a substantial post, railing and paling fence.

  5. The four acres were laid out by Mr. Surveyor Wilson and staff into the following divisions:
    (1.) Free and open ground.
    (2.) Presbyterian.
    (3.) Roman Catholics.
    (4.) Church of England.
    (5.) Jews.
    (6.) Chinese.
    (7.) Any peculiar body.
    (8.) Not appropriated.

  6. Free and open ground.

  7. The ground presented difficulties in blocking out. Mr. Wilson overcame these difficulties.

  8. None of the blocks above enumerated are divided into grave grounds. The Managers regret want of funds to accomplish this object.

  9. They would like to fence the whole ten (10) acres, and then commence systematically the adornment or the improvement of the Queenstown Cemetery Reserve.

  10. It is finely situated.

  11. The following estimate of costs during this year have been reduced to the lowest dimensions, and some of them are already expended.

  12. Estimate:
Repairs to old fence ... £10
Mapping out graves (1 acre only) ... 20
Registering and numbering names of graves from 1863 (as far as practicable) ... 10
Keeping Cemetery in general repair ... 10
    Planting trees, shrubs, &c. ... 10
    Removal of rocks ... 10
    £70

  13. The revenue, after paying expenses, is estimated at £30. The Managers, however, would for other than the above purposes require:
    For fencing ... £100
For letting out grave ground ... 40
    £140

  14. The Balance-sheet is hereunto annexed.

  15. It was with the exception of one item forwarded to the Provincial Government 23rd February, 1869.

  16. The Managers regret that they never could obtain the Ordinance of 1864, and therefore have not complied with its conditions.

  17. The account has been kept in the Bank of Otago (Queenstown Branch), since the Managers took office.

  18. The fees are collected as rapidly as possible.

  19. The only bad debts are for persons interred by the Government.

  20. The funds are drawn out by cheques signed and countersigned.

  21. The balance in the bank was £36 4s. 7d. on the 31st December, 1871.

  22. The only items to be added to balance-sheet are the following:
