Examination of Candidates for Certificates of Competency as District School Teachers

An Examination of Candidates for Certificates of Competency as District School Teachers will take place at the Education Office, Dunedin, upon Friday and Saturday, the 22nd and 23rd of March, 1872.

The Inspector of Schools will also hold an Examination at the Government Buildings, Invercargill, about the middle of April, 1872.

The Kaitangata School Committee delayed selecting a Teacher till after the examination on the 22nd inst. The Committee is open to receive applications up to that date — Kaitangata, 5th March, 1872.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO

The undermentioned Scholarships will be open for competition to students for the ministry of the Presbyterian Church of Otago and Southland, at competitive examinations to be held in the Class Room of Knox Church, Dunedin, on the 30th day of April prox., 10 o’clock a.m.

  1. The Lang Scholarship — £20 per annum for two years; open to students who have already attended one year at any university. Subjects of examination, and marks for each:

    1. Latin — Virgil, Georgics, Book I — 100.
    2. Greek — Homer’s Iliad, Book I — 100.
    3. Mathematics — Euclid, Books I, II and III — 75.
    4. Algebra — Simple and Quadratic Equations — 75.
    5. English Literature and History — Reign of Queen Elizabeth — 100.
    6. Roman History — Century preceding Christ’s Advent — 100.

    Total marks — 550.

  2. The Synod Scholarship — £30 per annum for three years; open to students who have not yet attended any university. Subjects of examination and marks for each:

    1. Latin — Cicero, De Amicitia — 100.
    2. Greek — Elements of Grammar — 50.
    3. Mathematics — Euclid, Books I and II — 100.
    4. Arithmetic — General — 100.
    5. History — Period of George III — 100.
    6. Bible Knowledge — General knowledge of Gospels — 100.
    7. English Grammar and Analysis — 100.

    Total marks — 650.

Two-thirds at least of the total number of marks must be obtained to entitle any competitor to a Scholarship.

UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO

Richardson Scholarship

The Competition for the Richardson Scholarship will take place in the first week of May.

The subjects for examination, with the marks showing the relative value attached to each, are the following:

  • English, 100; Arithmetic, 150; Geometry, Euclid, Books I and II, 100; Algebra, 100; Latin, 200; Greek, 100; Geography and History of England from the Revolution to the Accession of Queen Victoria, 100; French, 50; Natural Science, 100.

Competitors must have attended for two years some Provincial School, and for one year the High School of Dunedin; and their age must not be over 18.

The Scholarship is tenable for three years, and the value is about £30 per annum.

The names of competitors must be sent in to the Secretary of University Council before 1st May.

Will be Opened on 1st May, 1872.

  1. Classics — Separate Classes for Junior and Senior Latin and Greek. Professor: G. S. Sale, M.A.

  2. Class for English Language and Literature. Professor: G. S. Sale, M.A.

  3. Mathematics — Separate Classes for Junior Mathematics, Mathematics and Natural Philosophy. Professor: John Shand, M.A.

  4. Mental and Moral Philosophy — Classes for Logic, Mental Science, Moral Philosophy, and Political Economy. Professor: D. Macgregor, M.A., M.B.

  5. Natural Science — Classes for Chemistry, Mineralogy and Geology. Professor: J. G. Black, M.A., D.Sc.

The session will last for six months continuously, during the entire course of which Instruction will be given.
