NOTICE is hereby given that Sections 2 of 45 and 3 of 45, Block IV, Dunedin and East Taieri District, containing respectively 40a and 73a 3r 12p, will be offered for sale by public auction, at the Land Office, Dunedin, on Thursday, the 7th day of March, 1872, at noon, at the upset price of 10s per acre.

NOTICE is hereby given that the remaining parts of Sections 5 and 7, Block XI, containing respectively 49a 0r 20p and 47a 2r 20p, and Sections 8 and 9, Block XI, Clutha district, containing respectively 49a 1r and 49a 1r 24p, will be offered for sale by public auction, at the Crown Hotel, Balclutha, on Thursday, the 7th day of March, 1872, at noon, at the upset price of 10s per acre.
NOTICE TO APPLICANTS FOR UNSURVEYED LAND under "Otago Waste Lands Act 1866."
It is hereby notified to the applicant whose name appears in the subjoined Schedule, that the Waste Land Board has declared him to be the purchaser of the sections set opposite his name in the Schedule, and that the purchase money of these sections must be paid to the Receiver of Land Revenue in Dunedin, on or before Wednesday, the 28th day of February, 1872, otherwise the applications will be deemed withdrawn, cancelled and void, and the deposit made at the time of lodging the application will be forfeited.

PROVINCIAL SCHOLARSHIPS.
THE Education Board has authorized the offering of Three Scholarships for competition; one for High School Pupils, and two for Boys who attended the District Schools in 1871. The examination will probably take place in February. Particulars will be given in next issue.

PROVINCIAL SCHOLARSHIPS.—The following Regulations of the Education Board respecting Provincial Scholarships are published for general information. Schoolmasters are requested to forward to me, before the 26th February, 1872, a list containing the names and ages of intending competitors belonging to their several schools.

REGULATIONS.

Three Scholarships, in connection with the High School, shall be open for competition on the 27th of February, 1872, to boys who shall have been in attendance at the public schools of Otago during the year 1871. Two of the said Scholarships shall be bestowed on boys from the District Schools, and one on a boy who has attended the High School. Competitors must be under fourteen years of age at the date of the competition.

The holders for the time being of the said Scholarships shall be called "Provincial Scholars," and shall be entitled to the privileges and advantages hereinafter specified. A Scholarship shall be tenable as long as the holder of it remains a pupil of the High School, but not longer than five years.

The said Scholarships respectively shall be awarded to such candidates as shall have shown the greatest proficiency at a Competitive Examination, to be held at the High School on the day above specified; and such Competitive Examination shall be by written papers, and shall embrace the following subjects:—
I. Arithmetic and Algebra, as far as Simple Equations, inclusive.
II. English Grammar, including the Analysis of Sentences.
III. Geography.—The definitions; New Zealand and North America; the drawing from memory of an outline map of a Country to be named by the Examiners.
IV. British History.—The Four Georges.
V. Dictation.
VI. A simple Narrative, selected by the Examiners, to be read aloud to the Competitors and reproduced by them.
VII. An Original Description or Account of some familiar object or operation, the subject to be selected by the Examiners.
VIII. Penmanship, as shown by the Competitors' Papers on the subjects before mentioned. Preference will be given to a plain round hand.
IX. Marks will be given for the reading of Prose and Poetry, and for Recitation.
