IMPOUNDED

on the 21st day of November, 1871,

by John Turnbull, constable, one Bay Horse, no visible brand, white spot on forehead, off eye out, owner unknown, trespassing on Princes street; and, in default of being released, the above horse will be sold at the Public Pound, at South Dunedin, on Friday, the 15th day of December, 1871, at twelve o’clock noon.—John Barr, Poundkeeper of the South Dunedin Pound.

IMPOUNDED on the 21st day of November, 1871,

by John Irving, Ranger, one roan bullock and one red bullock, branded like AD conjoined, on rump, on ribs, owner unknown, for trespassing on Mr Turnbull’s paddock, North Taieri, for which one pound driving expenses is claimed, and in default of being released, the above cattle will be sold at the public pound at West Taieri, on Friday, the 15th December, 1871, at 12 o’clock noon.—Michael Tynan, poundkeeper of the West Taieri pound.

IMPOUNDED on the 21st day of November, 1871,

by Special Constable Nicolls, Taieri Bridge, one dark chestnut mare, branded IS near shoulder, the same under saddle near side, owner unknown, for trespassing on Main South Road, for which two shillings driving expenses is claimed, and in default of being released, the above mare will be sold at the public pound at Otokia, on Friday, 15th December, 1871, at 12 o’clock noon.—Samuel O’Kane, poundkeeper of the Otokia pound.

by Mr Irving, ranger, for trespassing on Waihola Hundred, one Bay Filly, branded R near neck; also one Black Horse, branded Y near shoulder; and, in default of being released, will be sold on Friday, 15th December, 1871, at 12 o’clock noon, at Tokomairiro Pound.—James Goodall, Poundkeeper.

THE DIRECTORS of the CALEDONIAN SOCIETY of OTAGO have agreed to offer the following Prizes at the forthcoming Annual Gathering, on the 1st and 2nd January, 1872.

For an Essay on the “Writings of Sir W. Scott and their influence on the present age”—1st prize £5, 2nd prize £2 10s.

For Children who have attended any Elementary School in the Province during the current year. Three prizes in each of the following subjects, of £1 10s., £1, and 10s.:

I. British History, from the Accession of George I till the Outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789, Text Books, British Empire, S. S. B. A., Collier’s British History, and Tales of a Grandfather.

II. Analysis of a portion of “Gloomy Winter’s noo awa.”

III. Recitation from a Scottish author.

IV. Recitation from an English author. (Recitations to be not less than twenty lines.)

V. A prize of £1 10s for general excellence in all the above subjects.

The Essays to be sent in to the undersigned not later than the 28th December, 1871.

The examination of School-children will be held on Saturday, 20th December, 1871, at a time and place to be named hereafter.

LABOR MARKET.

NOTICE to Employers of Labor and Persons who wish to obtain Employment.—A Register is kept at each of the Police Stations in the Province, in which employers of labor are requested to enter their names when wanting to engage servants, giving particulars as to the class they wish to employ, the period for which they wish to engage them, and the rate of wages they propose to pay.

The members of the Police Force in charge of the Stations have been instructed to afford every possible information on the subject to men wishing to obtain employment, &c.

Lost—Stolen or Strayed from Tokomairiro, a stout brown Mare, branded 7 near shoulder, white star, and one white hind foot; also brown Gelding, branded D near shoulder, stripe down back. Information to H. Sprosen, Tokomairiro. 4t.10s.

WHEREAS a fire, supposed to have been caused by the act of an incendiary, occurred on the 11th day of October last, at Invercargill, in the Province of Otago, in the Bank of Otago and other buildings: It is hereby notified that His Excellency the Governor will grant a free pardon to any accomplice in such act, not being a principal offender, who shall give such information as will lead to the apprehension and conviction of the principal offender or offenders, or any of them, if more than one.
