WAIHOLA WEST ROAD BOARD.—Notice is hereby given, that the General Road Board having issued the precept for the collection of the Rate for the year 1870-71, ratepayers are requested to pay the amount of their respective rates to the Collector within thirty days from this date.—WILLIAM DUFF, Clerk to the Board. December 12, 1870.

NOTICE.—The Precept authorising the collection of the Highway Rate for the Broad Bay District, for the year 1870-71, having been issued, ratepayers are requested to pay the amount of their respective rates to me, at my house, on or before the 6th January, 1871. For the convenience of ratepayers, I will be at the Schoolhouse on Friday, the 6th January, 1871, between the hours of 12 and 2 p.m.—ROBERT DECK, Collector. Broad Bay, 20th December, 1870.

TO THE GENERAL ROAD BOARD, DUNEDIN—The Trustees of the Local Board, Brighton, intend to levy a rate of 1s. in the pound, the incoming year.—J. YORSTON, Clerk. Brighton, Dec., 19th, 1870.

THE FINEGAND ROAD BOARD hereby give notice that, unless all rates due to the said Board be paid at once, proceedings will be taken for their recovery without further notice being given.—JOHN DALZIEL, Clerk, Balclutha. December 26, 1870.

CLARENDON ROAD DISTRICT.—Notice.—Parties who have not paid their Road Rates for the year 1870-71, are requested to do so within 21 days from the date of this notice, otherwise legal proceedings will be taken for the recovery of the same.—R. B. TWELFTR EE, Collector. Lake Waipori, 24th December, 1870.

IMPOUNDED on the 23rd day of December, 1870, by W. Carey, for Alexander Stewart, Flag Swamp: 1 bay Mare, branded DB under saddle, scar under right eye, shod all round; 1 bay Mare, branded F.O near shoulder, a few grey hairs on forehead, shod all round; owners unknown; for trespassing on grass paddocks at Flag Swamp; for which 7s. 6d. each damages is claimed; and in default of being released, the above mares will be sold at the Public Pound, Hawksbury, on Friday, the 13th day of January, 1871, at 12 o’clock noon.—ARCH. IMPOUNDED on the 19th day of December, 1870, by John Stevenson, Taieri Bush, one red and white yearling Steer, branded like JK off ribs, and one strawberry Bullock, branded like JK off rump, owner unknown, for trespassing on an enclosed paddock, for which two shillings per head damages is claimed; and in default of being released, the above cattle will be sold at the Public Pound at Otakia on Friday, the 13th day of January, 1871, at 12 o’clock noon.—SAMUEL O’KANE, Poundkeeper of the Otakia Pound.

£2 REWARD.—Strayed or Stolen from the Maori Kaik, 2 Cows, branded JG on near rump, and F on near shoulder. Any person or persons giving such information as will lead to their recovery will receive the above reward; if stolen, £5 for each cow will be paid on conviction of the thief.

STOLEN or STRAYED, from Otakia Run, about 1st November last, Bay Mare, age 4 years, brand D off shoulder, white mark on nose. Whoever will give such information to Mr. Fenwick, East Taieri Hotel, as will lead to the recovery of said Mare, will receive a Reward.

PORT CHALMERS RAILWAY.

THIS DEED is made the nineteenth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy between John Thomas Chaplin of Dunedin in the Province of Otago and Colony of New Zealand coach proprietor of the first part; David Proudfoot of the same place contractor of the second part; James Macandrew Esquire Superintendent of the Province of Otago of the third part and Richard Oliver and Thomas Birt Ulph both of Dunedin aforesaid and carrying on there together in copartnership the business of iron merchants under the style or firm of “Oliver and Ulph” of the fourth part. Whereas by deed bearing date the twenty-fifth day of January one thousand eight hundred and seventy made between James Macandrew Esquire Superintendent of the Province of Otago of the one part and the said David Proudfoot and John Thomas Chaplin of the other part for the considerations therein mentioned the said James Macandrew as such Superintendent as aforesaid by and with the advice and consent of his Executive Council did enter into a certain agreement with the said David Proudfoot and John Thomas Chaplin for the construction maintenance and working by the said David Proudfoot and John Thomas Chaplin their heirs executors administrators or assigns of a single line of railway from Port Chalmers in the said Province of Otago to the City of Dunedin in the same Province and of other works in connection therewith upon the terms and subject to the several covenants provisions conditions and agreements on their respective parts therein contained. And whereas by an Ordinance passed in the twenty-seventh Session of the Provincial Council of the Province of Otago number three hundred and seven (307) and shortly intituled The Dunedin and Port Chalmers Railway Agreement Validation Ordinance 1870 the hereinbefore in part recited deed or agreement and all the clauses and provisions thereof were validated by the said Council. And whereas the said John Thomas Chaplin and David Proudfoot were jointly interested in the said in part recited deed or agreement in equal shares. And whereas the said John Thomas Chaplin with the consent and approbation of the said David Proudfoot lately contracted and agreed with the said Richard Oliver and Thomas Birt Ulph for the sale to them of the share and interest of him the said John Thomas Chaplin of and in the said in part recited deed or agreement and all his benefit and advantage thereunder at or for the price or sum of two thousand eight hundred and fifty-six pounds four shillings and one penny. And whereas the said David Proudfoot John Thomas Chaplin Richard Oliver and Thomas Birt Ulph have applied to and requested the said James Macandrew as such Superintendent as aforesaid to consent to the transfer of the interest of the said John Thomas Chaplin in the said agreement to the said Richard Oliver and Thomas Birt Ulph the said James Macandrew as such Superintendent as aforesaid and with the advice and consent of his Executive Council has agreed to do in manner herein after appearing upon the said Richard Oliver and Thomas Birt Ulph entering into such covenant on their part to perform the said agreement as is hereinafter contained. Now this deed witnesseth that in pursuance of the said agreement in this behalf and in consideration of the sum of two thousand eight hundred and fifty-six pounds four shillings and one penny paid by the said Richard Oliver and Thomas Birt Ulph to the said John Thomas Chaplin on or before the execution of these presents (the receipt whereof the said John Thomas Chaplin hereby acknowledges and therefrom releases the said Richard Oliver and Thomas Birt Ulph and each of them their and each of their heirs executors and administrators) he the said John Thomas Chaplin with the consent and approbation of the said David Proudfoot (testified by his being a party to and
