ALL DAY BAY
Harbor Office, Port Chalmers.
1st November, 1870.
SIR,—Agreeably to the request of His Honor the Superintendent, I have the honor to report on the capabilities of Allday Bay as follows:—
It is a deep bight on the coast, about half-way between Moeraki Bluff and Oamaru Headland, affording better shelter from the S.W. than Kakanui Roads, by a reef which extends seaward from the south end of the Bay, inside of which vessels under 100 tons may safely anchor in moderate weather within one cable length of the beach, in four fathoms water and good holding ground: the bottom being stiff clay. Vessels can hold on at this roadstead and load or discharge cargo during S.W. winds, when they have to clear out at Kakanui. With N.E. winds both roadsteads are the same as to shelter, of course; Kakanui having the advantage as a port, with the river when it is open; so that the work of the shipping can be done in smooth water.
I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your most obedient servant,
Wm. Thomson,
Harbor Master.
The Provincial Secretary of Otago.
