There are various other matters of more or less interest in their bearing upon the welfare of the Province with which you will be called upon to deal. I shall only allude to one of these, viz., the question of providing a School for the education of girls, analogous to that which we already possess in the High School for boys. Until this is done, our education system is anything but complete, and it appears to me to be high time for us to deal with the question practically.

Gentlemen,—I have to congratulate you upon the anticipated visit of his Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh, who it is hoped will arrive here in the course of a few days. His Royal Highness will, it is expected, be accompanied by his Excellency the Governor. You will, I am sure, concur in the arrangements which have been made for the suitable entertainment during their stay among us of those distinguished visitors. I only regret that their stay is likely to be too limited to afford the people in the interior of the Province the same opportunity which those in and around Dunedin will have of exhibiting their loyalty to the British Crown, and of showing that, although far removed from the Fatherland, they still cherish a warm attachment to its time honored associations.

I propose to ask you to unite with me in an address on behalf of the Province to be presented to His Royal Highness on landing.

I now declare this Council open for the despatch of business.

JAMES MACANDREW,
Superintendent.

NOTICE TO CONTRACTORS.—Tenders due during the week ending 1st May, 1869, are hereby extended to noon of Tuesday, 4th May, 1869.

Printed under the authority of the Provincial Government of Otago, by MILLS, DICK & Co., of Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand, Printers to the said Provincial Government for the time being.
