In the matter of the Petition of Charles Hopkinson, of Moeraki, in the Province of Otago, Stock-owner, a Debtor, with the concurrence of Frederick Louis Mieville, of Dunedin, in the Province of Otago aforesaid, a creditor of the said Charles Hopkinson to the extent of not less than Fifty Pounds; and in the matter of the “Debtors and Creditors Act, 1862.”

NOTICE is hereby given that the above Petition has been accepted by his Honor Mr. Justice Chapman, who has appointed Monday, the third day of July, 1865, at ten o’clock in the forenoon at the Supreme Court House, Dunedin, for the hearing of the matters in the said Petition.

ALLOWANCE TO WITNESSES SUPREME COURT.

THE following is published for general information:—

Sir, I am directed to inform you that, for the present, and pending further and final arrangements, you are authorised to allow the expenses in Criminal Prosecutions, in accordance with the Regulations of 23rd February, 1864 (published in the Gazette of 3rd March); but in the case of Prosecutors in witnesses, according to the following scale:—

Common Witnesses, such as Labourers, per diem, 6s.
Journeymen, &c., ... ... ... 10s.
Master Tradesmen, ... ... ... 15s.
Farmers and Yeomen, ... ... 15s.
Auctioneers, ... ... ... 15s.
Professional Men, ... ... ... 21s.
Female Witnesses at the rate of two-thirds the allowance to Male Witnesses of similar rank.

Travelling Expenses.

Where the Witnesses reside at a distance exceeding one mile from the place of trial, travelling expenses at not exceeding 1s. 6d. per mile one way.

Witnesses being officers in the pay of the Government are not to be paid for their time, but only for extra costs occasioned by their attendance.

HIS Excellency the Governor has been pleased to make the following promotions and appointments, viz.:—

In the Dunedin Artillery Volunteers.

Charles Henry Hardy, M.D., to be Surgeon. Date of Commission, March 8th, 1865.

In the Dunedin Volunteer Naval Brigade.

Thomas Moreland Hocken, to be Surgeon. Date of Commission, March 9th, 1865.

In the Otago Rifle Volunteers.

Blair Fullarton to be Captain, Waikouaiti Rifle Volunteer Company. Date of Commission, March 30th, 1865.

William Shand, to be Lieutenant, Caversham (or South District) Rifle Volunteer Company. Date of Commission, March 30th, 1865.

IMPOUNDED on the 16th day of May, 1865, by Ed. Downes, Ranger on Dunedin Hundred, one dark strawberry Cow, branded JPH (the J and P conjoined) off rump, owner unknown; for trespassing on the Dunedin Hundred; and in default of being released, the above cow will be sold at the Public Pound, at Blueskin, on the 10th day of June, 1865, at 12 o’clock noon.

IMPOUNDED, on the 18th day of May, 1865, by Constable Johnston, one Grey Horse; no visible brand; owner unknown; for trespassing on Princes-street, Dunedin; and in default of being released, the above Horse will be sold at the Public Pound, at South Dunedin, on the 16th day of June, 1865, at 12 o’clock noon.

SUBSCRIPTIONS will be at the rate of £1 per annum, or 5s. per quarter, payable in advance to the Publisher. Single copies of the Gazette not to exceed 6d. Subscriptions can commence at any time, but must terminate not later than 31st December, 1865.

PRIVATE ADVERTISEMENTS will be charged at the rate of 6d. per line. Late Advertisements, 1s.

THE GAZETTE is published every Wednesday morning, and Notices for Insertion must be received at the Superintendent’s Office not later than 2 o’clock p.m. on the Tuesday preceding. Advertisements received after that hour will be charged 1s. per line. Any irregularity in the receipt of those Gazettes which are given gratis by the Government should be reported at once to the Provincial Secretary.
