✨ Report on Molyneux River Navigation and Dunedin Hospital Diseases

here we had to make portage of the boat round the Falls—which appear to be about 6 or 8 feet, perpendicular drop, over very large rock in centre of the river—dropped the boat down for about three-quarters of a mile through the rough water, which detained us till 11:14 a.m. About half a mile below this place we came to a very heavy rapid, which we were forced to run as current was very rapid, and could not make landing with boat; we shipped a large quantity of water, and very nearly got swamped. Two miles below this point we had to drop boat down over heavy rapid; and five miles above Capt. Baldwin’s station came to heavy rapid and fall, where we had to launch boat over rocks about 20 feet; the fall here is about from 4 to 6 feet, formed by rocks in the centre of the river. Camped for the night about two and a half miles above Capt. Baldwin’s station. On Wednesday, the 18th, at 7:50, arrived at Baldwin’s station; left there at 8:10; came to heavy rapid about a mile and a-half below where we had to drop the boat down. The river from this rapid to the Tuapeka, a distance of four miles, is very good. About two and a half miles below the Tuapeka there is a very heavy rapid, where we had to drop the boat down. One and a half miles further down the river commences to be navigable, and continues so to the Tuapeburn, where the river is contracted, and channel very narrow, not safe for steam-boat; and from thence to the Beaumont, about six miles, the river is not safe for steamboats.
The river I consider navigable at this stage of water, about 14 miles above the Tuapeka Junction, and from thence with one portage round the Beaumont Rapids, could be opened up within four miles of the Teviot, which is about the centre of all the principal diggings, both on the Molyneux and the Wakatipu Lake. After my making the first trip up the Molyneux with the new steamer, which is now nearly completed, I will be willing to give any information before a select Committee of the Government, on the feasibility of opening up the river to within four miles of the Teviot.
Hoping that the above will answer all purposes,
I remain, Sir,
Your most obedient servant,
A. S. MURRAY.
