PROCLAMATION
FOR REGULATING THE SLAUGHTERING
OF CATTLE,
By His Honor John Hyde Harris, Esq., Deputy-Superintendent of the Province of Otago.
WHEREAS by an Ordinance “For Regulating the Slaughtering of Cattle in certain places,” passed by the Lieutenant-Governor and Legislative Council of New Zealand, in the 11th year of the reign of Her present Majesty, it is enacted that it shall be lawful for His Excellency the Governor, by proclamation from time to time, to constitute and define certain districts for the purpose aforesaid: And it is also enacted that within any such district, and after a day to be prescribed by any such Proclamation, no person shall keep a Slaughter House, or place for slaughtering cattle intended for Sale, Barter, Shipping, or Exportation, except such house or place be duly licensed for that purpose in manner in the said Ordinance provided. AND WHEREAS by an Ordinance intituled, “An Ordinance to empower the Superintendent of the Province of Otago to perform certain acts heretofore performed by the Governor or Lieutenant-Governors of New Zealand,” and by “The Resident Magistrate of Otago, passed by the Superintendent and Provincial Council of the said Province, the powers vested in the Governor by the said first recited Ordinance are within the limits of the said Province conferred on the Superintendent thereof. AND WHEREAS by a Proclamation made and issued by John Larkins Cheese Richardson, Esq., Superintendent of the said Province, on the 26th day of June, 1862, I, the Honourable John Hyde Harris, Esq., am appointed to be Deputy Superintendent of the said Province, and as such Deputy Superintendent to perform and exercise during the absence from the Province of the said John Larkins Cheese Richardson, all the acts and powers (except such powers as are conferred by the Constitution Act, 15 and 16 Vic., ch. 72) which might be exercised and performed by him. Now THEREFORE I, the said John Hyde Harris, Deputy Superintendent of the said Province, in pursuance and exercise of the power vested in me as aforesaid, do hereby proclaim and declare that I have constituted the several districts hereinafter named and described to be Districts for the purpose of the said first recited Ordinance, and within which from and after the 15th day of August, 1862, the several provisions of the said first recited Ordinance shall come into operation, and take effect, that is to say—
OAMARU SLAUGHTER HOUSE DISTRICT.—Bounded towards the north-north-east by the Waitaki River; towards the east-south-east by the Ocean; towards the south by the Waitati Stream to its source, thence by the ranges to Boulder Burn, and by Boulder Burn to the Taieri River; towards the west by the Taieri River to Kye Burn, by Kye Burn to its source, thence by a line to the Otikou Stream, and by the Otikou Stream to the Waitaki River.
DUNEDIN SLAUGHTER HOUSE DISTRICT.—Bounded towards the north by the Oamaru Slaughter House District; towards the east and south by the Ocean; towards the south-west by the Taieri River; and towards the north-west by the Taieri River.
TOKOMAIRIRO SLAUGHTER HOUSE DISTRICT.—Bounded towards the north-west by the Waitahuna River; thence towards the north by an east and west line to Waitahuna Hill; thence towards the north-east by a line to Meggat Burn at its source, by Meggat Burn to the Waipori Lake, thence by a line across the Lake to the Taieri River, and by the Tuapeka and Dunedin Slaughter House Districts; towards the south-east by the Ocean; and towards the south-west by the Clutha River (Matau branch) to the Waitahuna River.
TUAPEKA SLAUGHTER HOUSE DISTRICT.—Bounded towards the north by Minzion Burn to its source, thence by a line to the Lammerlaw, thence by a line to the source of Deep Stream, and by Deep Stream to the Taieri River, and by a line across the Taieri River; towards the east by the Dunedin and Oamaru Slaughter House Districts; towards the south-west by the Taieri River to the Waipori Lake, thence by the Tokomairiro Slaughter House District; and towards the south and south-east by the Tokomairiro Slaughter House District.
CLUTHA SLAUGHTER HOUSE DISTRICT.—Bounded towards the north by the Umbrella Ranges to Mount Benger, thence by a line to and across the Clutha River; towards the east by the east side of the said River to Minzion Burn, thence by the Tuapeka and Tokomairiro Slaughter House Districts to the Ocean; towards the south by the Ocean; towards the west by the boundary of the Province of Southland, and by the Waikaka Creek and its western branch to the Umbrella Ranges.
