Extract from the Minutes of the Half-yearly Meeting of the Otago Education Board 21st October, 1861.—The Secretary laid on the table the Annual Report prepared by him agreeably to the provisions of the “Education Ordinance, 1861.” The Meeting after consideration of the Secretary’s Report unanimously approved of the same. The Board took into consideration the sums required for the purposes of Education for the half-year ending March 31st, 1862, when the sums specified in Appendix E of the Secretary’s Reports were respectively agreed to. The Board also agreed to place on the proposed estimate of Expenditure the sum of Two Thousand Pounds to defray the cost of the erection of a High School for the City of Dunedin.

TO THE
OTAGO EDUCATION BOARD.
The present Education Board entered on the performance of the duties devolved upon it at a period of more than ordinary difficulty, caused by the derangement of the usual order of things consequent upon the discovery of the Gold Fields in this Province. Finding it impossible to proceed with the immediate erection of the School Buildings for which monies had been voted by the Provincial Council, the Board adopted the following resolution, viz.:—
“The Board, having taken into consideration the sums voted by the Provincial Council at its recent session for the erection of school buildings in several localities, and having taken into account the deranged state of the labour market, resolved, ‘That in present circumstances it is very inexpedient, and...
