Public Buildings and Infrastructure Report

394

District police station buildings, chiefly of a portable description, have been and are being erected at the following places, viz:—Dunedin, Port Chalmers, Tuapeka, Waitahuna, Weatherstones, Waipori, Tokomairiro, Lower Taieri Ferry, Upper Taieri Ferry, and Clutha. The prison hulk is complete.

Supposing Immigration from Britain is resumed, additional barracks will be needed, the buildings lately used as such being now mostly occupied by the police. A sum of £750 is applied for under that head. In connection with the present government offices, besides several other improvements, an addition to the Land office, and an office for the Provincial Engineer are now in course of erection. These, as they can be only deemed temporary, are being done at the least possible expense, but a suit of permanent buildings adequate to the service, should be commenced as soon as practicable; but until such buildings can be provided, it is plain that further temporary accommodation will be wanted at the present site.

As to the Court-house at Oamaru, the plans and tenders for it are now before the Government, and the erection of the Court house at Port Chalmers, for reasons of which your Honor is aware, was deferred.

The barrack buildings for the military are now almost finished and ready for occupation.

I have only farther to refer to the educational buildings. The central division of the High School is contracted for and begun, but it will be necessary to complete it by the addition of the class-room wings and corridors on each side, as without them the building will be of comparatively little use for the purposes and aims of the institution.

The Schools—North Dunedin, Green Island, and Oamaru districts are also contracted for and began.

The repairs on Port Chalmers and Portobello school buildings are executed, and those on Wakari, Moeraki Bush, Tokomairiro, South Clutha, Inch Clutha, and Warepa are being done.

The only others necessary to mention are the proposed Taieri and Saddle-hill district school buildings. As to the first, the case not being urgent, and it having become apparent that a considerably larger school-house than was at first contemplated would be wanted, it was deemed advisable to defer its erection awaiting an increased appropriation.

That at Saddle-hill was deferred because the appropriation was found quite inadequate, both a school and teacher’s house being needed in that district.

I have, &c.,

W. LANGLANDS,
Superintendent of Public Buildings.

To His Honor Major Richardson,
Superintendent of Otago.
