BANKING.

ACCEPTED TENDER.

Union Bank of Australia,
Dunedin, March 25, 1862.

To his Honor Major J. Richardson, Superintendent of Otago.

Sir,—In reply to your letter of 25th January last, enquiring—

1st. To what extent will the Bank under my management allow the Government to overdraw its account?

2nd. What rate of interest will it charge on overdrawn accounts?

3rd. What interest will it allow on deposit accounts?

4th. What advantage will it grant the Government, in remittances to Great Britain or elsewhere, over the current rates?

I have now the honour to say—

1st. That this Bank has never sought to place a limit to the overdrafts of any of the New Zealand Governments. Believing them to be desirous of keeping their expenditure in fair proportion to their income, we have always granted what such temporary overdrafts were required.

We will be equally liberal with the Government of Otago, and it is therefore perhaps unnecessary to fix any amount; though I may inform you that such overdrafts have been allowed—pending the
