ings and reporting the same to the proper authorities without delay, may have allotted to them, on special sanction, an extent of ground equal to treble the area of an ordinary surface claim. The increased grant shall not be given to more than four miners composing such party. For the purpose of this regulation, a New Gold Working shall mean, “ground previously unworked and capable of affording employment to not less than fifty miners.”

Discontinuing Working of Claims, the same shall be forfeited.

The Fifteenth Rule is thus added to:—

But the Commissioner may, at his discretion, suspend for seven days the operation of this regulation, as regards the period during which a Claim may remain unworked, or in reserve; but in such cases the suspension shall be given in writing.

Auriferous Quartz Reefs.

Rule Fifteen (A).—The successful prospector of an Auriferous Quartz Reef shall be entitled to an area, described by a measurement of 160 feet in the direction of the Reef, and 150 feet on each side of its centre. And each Miner working a Reef, and holding a Miner’s Right, shall be entitled to a Claim of 25 feet by 300 feet, measured in the same manner.

Rule Twenty-Third.—The following words are cancelled in Rule 23:—“Such license to remain in office, for the period of twelve months from the date of issue.”

Wet Sinking.

Applications for Claims for Wet Sinking will be entertained by the Commissioner, and decided on by him in communication with the Government, at the rate of not more than four miners’ ordinary claims to one-horse power.

WARRANT

Appointing Auditor of Public Accounts of the Province of Otago.

By His Excellency Sir George Grey, Knight, Commander of the Most Honorable Order of the Bath, Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over Her Majesty’s Colony of New Zealand and its Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral of the same, &c., &c., &c.

WHEREAS it is enacted by the “Provincial Audit Act, 1861,” that the Superintendent and Provincial Council of any Province in New Zealand, within one month after the commencement of the Session of such Council which shall ensue next after the passing of the said Act shall concur in the nomination of some fit and proper person to be Auditor of the Public Accounts: Provided that in default of such appointment within the time aforesaid, the Governor shall nominate a fit and proper person for such office, and the person so nominated by the Governor for such office shall thereupon be appointed to the same by Warrant under the hand of the Speaker of such Council.

And whereas the Superintendent and Provincial Council of the Province of Otago did not concur in the nomination of such person to be such Officer as aforesaid within the time before mentioned:

Now, therefore, I, George Grey, the Governor of New Zealand, in pursuance and exercise of the said power and authority, do hereby nominate
