GOVERNMENT NOTICE.
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, in pursuance of the Roads Ordinance, 1861, that I, JOHN LARKINS CHEESE RICHARDSON, Superintendent of the Province of Otago, have deemed it expedient to make a New Road between Saddle Hill and North Taieri, passing in part over portions of existing lines of road, and which said new road is intended to pass through the following sections, viz.:β

And that I have caused a Map and Survey Plan thereof, describing the exact course and bearings, and the admeasurements required for the same, together with an estimate of the expense of the work, and the compensation (if any) proposed to be paid to the owners or occupiers of such lands respectively, to be deposited in the office of the Provincial Engineer at Dunedin: And I hereby call upon all persons affected to set forth in writing, addressed to me within thirty days from the first publication of this notice, any well grounded objections they may have to the work, or any claims they may have in respect thereof: And I fix Saturday the 2nd day of November next, at Eleven o'clock in the forenoon, at my office, at Dunedin, for any person to be affected by such proposed work, and who shall have set forth in writing his objections or claims as aforesaid, to appear before me and my Executive Council, and he shall be heard in support of the same.

THE TUAPEKA GOLD FIELD.

SIR,βAt your request I note down a few observations on the Gold Fields, taken during my trip to them last week. I made the journey in 1 1/2 days' easy travelling on horseback by the North Taieri Road. This route is capable of much improvement, and I have no doubt will be much frequented during this coming summer. In snowy and stormy weather the Tokomairiro road is preferable, though longer.
On coming in sight of Gabriel's Gully, I was much astonished at the change that had taken
