Provincial Government Appointments and Notices

sonally offer no authentie information, but may
state that the present valley, both geologically
and physically, is represented by many others
out of the Lammerlaw and adjacent ranges
of mountains; so it may be inferred that other
fields will be found. There is sufficient to
warrant the Government taking steps to or-
ganise a system of surveillance over the mining
population by the appointment of a Commis-
sioner, Police Force, and Escort. The number
of diggers were 150 when I was there, three
days ago, but now they will exceed 300. Dis-
putes were on the carpet when I was there,
and these will be kept down by the temporary
Committee elected by the diggers: but an ear-
nest desire was expressed to me that the Gover-
ment would place a gentleman of standing and
ability to watch over the general interests,
and arrest any tendency to disputes and blood-
shed.

Regarding the prospects of individuals going
to the field a few words are necessary. All
that go well provided with tools and provi-
sions are doing well: so others may do like-
wise; but I met a class in great numbers that
will not do well, and had better remain in con-
stant employment where they are: that is those
who have neither money, tools, nor provisions,
labour at daily hire, at much the same rates
as are given in Dunedin, considering the
difference of cost of food. I heard ten shil-
lings was the rate of wages at the "Diggins";
but I saw instances in which grown-up men
grossly abused the privileges of shelter and
board by refusing to pay for the same. I
met many going up in an unprovided condition,
and this fact will require attention from your
Honor's Government.

I must add my testimony to the highly re-
spectable and orderly character of the class of
population that was actually at work, but
this cannot last long. The evil-disposed and
idle will find their way also, and these require
to be attended to. Apologising for the hasti-
ness of this Report,

I have the honour to be,
SIR,
Your obedient Servant,
J. T. THOMSON,
Chief Surveyor.

P.S.—As I brought in Peter Lindsay's gold,
and deposited it at the Oriental Bank, where
it was weighed, I may state the actual results:

Gold, estimated in the field at 2½ lbs.,
weighed 2 lbs. 3 oz. 14 dwt.

Gold, weighed in the field at 7½ oz., weighed
in Bank 7 oz. 9 dwt.

Some dwts. will require to be deducted for
dross.
