IT is hereby notified for general information that the firing for the Prizes voted by the Legislature of New Zealand, for the best shots amongst the Militia and Volunteer Forces, will take place simultaneously throughout each Militia District, on the 24th May next.
The best shot will receive the sum of Β£140, and a Champion Badge, which will be challengeable in each succeeding year.
The ranges for the firing will be 100 yards, 200 yards, and 300 yards respectively. Should two or more persons score an equal number of points, the ties will be shot off at 400 yards.

IT being considered desirable to bring into operation the "Petty Sessions Act, 1858," in those Districts in which there are no Resident Magistrates, the Government would feel obliged to Justices of the Peace residing in such Districts, if they would forward to this office any information or suggestions as to constituting the Districts in which they reside Petty Sessional Districts under the authority of the above-mentioned Act.

AT THE GOVERNMENT HOUSE, AT AUCKLAND,
The 1st day of February 1861.
Present:
His Excellency the Governor in Council.
WHEREAS by an Act of the General Assembly, intituled the "Arms Act, 1860," it is enacted that it shall be lawful for the Governor in Council from time to time to declare by order in Council to be published in the New Zealand Gazette, that from and after a day to be named in such order, the said Act shall be in force in any province within the Colony, and the same shall be in force accordingly: Provided always that the same shall be brought into force within every Province of the Colony before the first day of March 1861 :
Now, therefore, His Excellency the Governor, with the advice and consent of the Executive Council of New Zealand, doth hereby order that the said Act shall be in force in all the Provinces of the Colony on the twentieth day of February instant.
