Since the above was in type the following has been received, but does not appear to agree altogether with the former Return:—

Tapuanui, 3rd January 1860.

SIR,—I forward by this post the additional returns of Sheep for September 1859.

I have been compelled to make a second journey round the whole district to obtain them. Every return had been forwarded to me save one; but the stations are so distant from the postal line that they were delayed by the way.

I am happy to say that the settlers contemplate establishing a private post to go from Popotunoa, by the north end of Hokanui to the sources of the Oreti and Waiau.

I hope these returns may still prove in time.
