Proclamation of Marriage Act Districts




that it shall be lawful for the Governor at any time by Proclamation in the New Zealand Gazette to divide the Colony of New Zealand for the purposes of the said Act, into such and so many districts as he shall think fit, and every such district shall be called by a distinct name, and shall be a Registrar’s District.

Provided always that the Governor may at any time revoke the whole or any part of such proclamation, and issue a new proclamation, dividing the Colony or any portion of it anew, into Districts, or increasing the number, or altering the boundaries of Districts, as from time to time he may think requisite, and it is provided that the Districts already proclaimed under the "Marriage Act, 1854," shall be deemed to be Districts constituted under the now reciting Act.

Now, therefore—I, the Governor of the said Colony of New Zealand, in pursuance of the power and authority in me vested by the said in part recited Act, do hereby revoke every proclamation at any time heretofore issued, appointing and declaring Registrars’ Districts, under the said "Marriage Act, 1854," and the said "Marriage Act Amendment Act, 1858," or either of the said Acts, and I do, by this Proclamation, divide the said Colony, for the purposes of the said Act, into Districts, the names and boundaries whereof shall be as follows:


DUNEDIN DISTRICT.

Comprising Dunedin Hundred including the Townships of Dunedin and Port Chalmers. Bounded on the North by Blueskin Bay, and the Ocean; on the East by the Ocean; on the South by the Ocean; and on the North West by the Kaikorai Stream and Abbot’s Creek, thence to Flagstaff Hill, thence to Swamp Hill, thence to Double Hill, thence to the West end of Blueskin Bay.

WAITANGI DISTRICT.

Bounded on the North by the Ahuriri and Waitangi Rivers; on the East by the Ocean; on the South by Dunedin District as far as Double Hill, thence by a line due West to the Taieri River, including Runs twenty and thirty-nine, thence by the Taieri River to a point where it would be met by a line running due East from the Rock and Pillar Mountain, thence by such line to the Rock and Pillar Mountain, thence in a right line to the junction of the Manuherekia River with the river Clutha, thence by the rivers Clutha and Kawarau to Wakatipu Lake, and on the West by the Eyre Mountains, thence to Wanaka Lake, thence by the Wanaka and Hawea Rivers to Hawea Lake, thence by Hawea Lake and its East Head to a point where it would be cut by a line running due East and West over Hawea Mountain, thence by such line to the West head or branch of the River Ahuriri.

TAIERI DISTRICT.

Bounded on the North and North East by the Waitangi District, on the East and South East by the Dunedin District and the Ocean, on the South by the Ocean as far as a point called Cheeseland’s Mistake, thence by the watershed to the Umbrella Mountains and the Double Cone to the Wakatipu Lake.

INVERCARGILL DISTRICT.

Bounded on the North by the rivers Awarua, and Makarora to Wanaka Lake, on the East by the Waitangi and Taieri Districts; on the South by the Ocean, and on the West by the Ocean.

And I hereby declare that this Proclamation shall come into operation and take effect on the first day of October next.

Given under my hand, and issued under the Public Seal of the Colony, at Government House, at Auckland, this sixth day of July, in the year of Our Lord One thousand eight hundred and fifty-nine.

By His Excellency Colonel Thomas Gore Browne, Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over Her Majesty’s Colony of New Zealand, and Vice-Admiral of the same, &c. &c.

WHEREAS by an Act of the General Assembly, entitled "The Registration Act, 1858," it is enacted that it shall be lawful for the Governor, from time to time, by proclamation in the New Zealand Gazette, to divide the Colony, for the purposes of the said Act, into such and so many Districts as he shall think fit, and every such District shall be called by a distinct name, and shall be a Registrar’s District: Provided always that the Governor may at any time revoke the whole or any part of any such Proclamation, and issue a new Proclamation, dividing the Colony or any portion of it anew into Districts, or increasing the number, or altering the boundaries of Districts, as from time to time he may think requisite; and it is provided that the Districts existing at the
