PROCLAMATION.
By His Honor William Cargill, Esq., Superintendent of the Province of Otago.
WHEREAS by an Act made and enacted in the Parliament holden in the 15th and 16th years of the reign of Her present Majesty, intituled "An Act to grant a Representative Constitution to the Colony of New Zealand," it is amongst other things enacted, that for each of the Provinces established in New Zealand, there shall be a Superintendent to be elected by the persons duly qualified to elect members for the Provincial Council. And
WHEREAS by a Proclamation bearing date the fifth day of March 1853, made and issued by His Excellency Sir George Grey, Governor-in-Chief and Commander-in-Chief in and over the Islands of New Zealand, it is amongst other things provided that, on the day of nomination, to be fixed as therein provided, the Returning Officer shall preside at a meeting to be holden at noon. And if at such meeting there be no more candidates proposed than the number of members to be returned, the Returning Officer shall declare such candidate or candidates to be duly elected.
And whereas the principal Returning Officer for the Province of Otago, did on the 17th day of November 1855, openly declare and publicly notify at a meeting called for the purpose of nominating one person to serve as Superintendent for the said Province, that I, William Cargill, Esq., was duly elected to be the Superintendent of the Province of Otago. Now therefore, I do hereby proclaim and declare, that I have assumed the office of Superintendent of the Province of Otago accordingly, and I hereby call upon the inhabitants of the said Province to be aiding and assisting me therein.
