PATRIOTIC FUND.

A PUBLIC MEETING, called by His Honor the Superintendent, to take measures for promoting contributions in this Province in behalf of the Widows and Orphans of British Sailors and Soldiers who may fall in the war with Russia, was held in the Schoolhouse, Dunedin, on Thursday the 31st May ult., at half-past 12 o’clock at noon.

The Sheriff, A. C. STRODE, Esq., occupied the chair.

The following resolutions, accompanied with some appropriate remarks from the various speakers, were cordially and unanimously adopted:—

Moved by His Honor THE SUPERINTENDENT, and seconded by JOHN HYDE HARRIS, Esq.:

“That this meeting desires to express its heart-felt sympathy with our fellow-countrymen, together with the Armies and Navies of the Allied Nations now engaged in maintaining the cause of liberty against the aggression of Russia.”

Moved by the Rev. J. A. FENTON, and seconded by W. H. REYNOLDS, Esq.:

“That whilst this meeting deplores the evils of war, it recognizes in the present struggle one cause of rejoicing,—from the fact of its having cemented a most important alliance with the French nation.”

Moved by the Rev. THOS. BURNS, and seconded by EDWARD M’GLASHAN, Esq.:

“That this meeting being desirous of joining in the efforts which are being made in the country towards the Patriotic Fund of the British Empire, consider it to be the duty of every patriot and lover of his country to contribute to the extent of his ability.”

Moved by JOHN GILLIES, Esq., and seconded by MR. GEORGE SMITH:

“That with a view to give effect to the foregoing resolutions, a General Committee be formed, with directions to organize local committees throughout the Province—such Committee to consist of—

Moved by W. H. CUTTEN, Esq., and seconded by W. H. REYNOLDS, Esq.:

“That Mr. A. Chetham Strode be requested to act as Treasurer, and Captain Bellairs and Mr. Macandrew as Secretaries to the General Committee.”

Moved by JOHN JONES, Esq., and seconded by MR. W. LANGLANDS:

“That His Honor the Superintendent of this Province be requested to present a bill to the Provincial Council to vote a sum of money towards the support of the Widows and Orphans of the Soldiers and Sailors who may fall in the war with Russia.”

A subscription list having been opened in the room, the sum of £177 3s. was subscribed.

NOTE.—Captain Bellairs having declined to act as one of the Secretaries, Mr. Harris, at a meeting of the Committee, was appointed to act in his stead.
