HIS HONOR THE SUPERINTENDENT
has been pleased to authorise the publication of the following correspondence:—

Dunedin, Thursday Evening,
January 26th, 1854.

Sir,—Your Honor will recollect that when you requested me to act as Interim Treasurer for the Province, I undertook to do so on the understanding that my appointment would only be for a few days, and until such time as your Honor should make other and permanent arrangements.

I have now to inform your Honor that I should like to be released from the responsibility of the office at your earliest possible convenience.

In tendering this request, I hope your Honor will not consider that I am actuated by any change of motive from that which induced me to accept the office,—viz., a desire to facilitate your arrangements for conducting the public business. The same feeling would still prompt me to hold the office for a short time longer, if necessary; at the same time I should press my release from it at once.

I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your obedient and humble servant,

Thos. J. White,
His Honor the Superintendent.

Dunedin, 27th January, 1854.

Sir,—I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of yesterday, and to tender you my sincere thanks for the kindness with which you acceded to my request by taking upon you the duties of Interim Treasurer of this Province, and which duties required to be provided for ere the Government itself could be regularly formed.

I therefore lose no time in attending to your request, by the appointment of a Treasurer who will relieve you of the charge.

With many acknowledgments,
I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your most obedient servant,

W. CARGILL,
Superintendent.

Thomas John White, Esq.
