Notification of Application of Whenua Rāhui and Protection Principles—Makurerua Swamp Wildlife Management Reserve (Makerua Swamp Wildlife Management Reserve)
Pursuant to section 55(1)(a) of the Rangitāne o Manawatu Claims Settlement Act 2016 (“Act”), the Minister of Conservation (“Minister”) hereby notifies that the area described in the Schedule hereto has been declared to be subject to an overlay classification known as Whenua Rāhui by section 50 of the Act. The provisions which relate to the Whenua Rāhui are sections 50–63. Pursuant to section 55(1)(b) of the Act, the Minister hereby notifies that the following Protection Principles are directed at the Minister avoiding harm to, or the diminishing of, Rangitāne o Manawatu values related to Makurerua Swamp Wildlife Management Reserve (being Makerua Swamp Wildlife Management Reserve):
a. Protection of indigenous flora and fauna, natural resources and the wider environment within Makurerua Swamp Wildlife Management Reserve.
b. Recognition of the mana and kaitiakitanga of Rangitāne o Manawatu within Makurerua Swamp Wildlife Management Reserve.
c. Recognition of and respect for ngā tikanga o Rangitāne o Manawatu, Rangitāne o Manawatu kawa and its relevance to the protection of Makurerua Swamp Wildlife Management Reserve.
d. Respect for the interests and relationships that Rangitāne o Manawatu have with Makurerua Swamp Wildlife Management Reserve.
e. Encouragement of the respect for the association of Rangitāne o Manawatu with Makurerua Swamp Wildlife Management Reserve.
