Designated Character of Te Kura o Te Whānau-a-Apanui

Te Kura o Te Whānau-a-Apanui will provide a unique education for its tamariki based on what it is to be Te Whānau-a-Apanui in the 21st century.

The designated character of Te Kura o Te Whānau-a-Apanui has its foundation in the history, traditions and geographical location of Te Whānau-a-Apanui. It is visible in the carved poupou that embody our vision, values and future, and are a prominent feature of our kura.

Apanuitanga will be lived out:

  • in our motto, Tākore Tokatū, which means "To Be Strong and Steadfast" as well as the associated values of truth, respect, loyalty, guardianship and protection;
  • in the culture of the school, which embraces all students "mai Maraenui ki Whangaparāoa", covering the whole region of Te Whānau-a-Apanui. This includes the memories and histories of Te Kura o Ōmāiō, Raukōkore School and Te Whānau-a-Apanui Area School, which are recognised and acknowledged;
  • through our Te Whānau-a-Apanui curriculum which supports learning about the traditions, tikanga and oral history of Te Whānau-a-Apanui and the many historical landmarks of our iwi and its hapū. This may be delivered in Te Reo Māori, English or both;
  • through participation in events that promote mana Māori motuhake and in-depth knowledge of Te Whānau-a-Apanui, including manu kōrero, kapa haka, mahi toi, ngā tira haere i te rohe, i te motu whānui, Moki festivals and Kotahitanga days; and
  • through the spirituality which embraces our kura and the collective role that each person has for supporting it, and the wellbeing of our tamariki.

We aim to provide quality education through this designated character which will see our uri move into their future knowing who they are as mokopuna of Te Whānau-a-Apanui and being proud to be Māori and the kaitiaki of our mana whenua, mana moana and mana tangata.
